New Contemporaries 2021 at South London Gallery

New Contemporaries 2021 returns to the South London Gallery, for the fourth consecutive year, with 75 new and exciting artists. The exhibition presents the work of emerging and early career artists from UK art schools and alternative peer-to-peer learning programmes. Three internationally renowned artists Hew Locke, Tai Shani and Michelle Williams Gamaker have selected a new generation of artists.

To complement the exhibition, New Contemporaries has produced an exciting online platform to enable audiences to further engage with the artists’ work. The 2021 artists will also have access to development opportunities including mentoring, residencies, bursaries, fellowships, commissioning and other projects that enable artists’ practices to become more sustainable long-term.

Founded in 1949, New Contemporaries is a longstanding and vital organisation that gives visibility and recognition to an incredible diversity and depth of emerging talent. Each year the cohort is surrounded by a specific cultural framework that informs their practices. This year, more than ever, issues of equality, diversity and social justice are present throughout the exhibition.

The exhibition is presented across both the main space and Fire Station Galleries at SLG, and travels from Firstsite in Colchester.
