New Contemporaries received 1400 applications this year, and 57 artists have been selected to take part in an exhibition that will open at the Liverpool Biennial of Contemporary Arts in September, and tour to London. Thanks to the selectors this year:
Ken Lum, from Vancouver, Canada, brought a learned and rigorous perspective to the selection process. Artist, theorist, writer, curator and lecturer, Ken has exhibited his work throughout Canada, the US and Europe and been a teacher in the Fine Art Department, University of British Columbia since 1989.
The celebrated photographer Richard Billingham was shortlisted for the Turner Prize in 2001 and is a lecturer in the Art Department at the University of Gloucester. His series “Zoo”, based on childhood visits to Dudley Zoo, was recently exhibited at Compton Verney Gallery, and he is currently working on a feature film.
A star of the British Art Show 4 in 1995, artist Ceal Floyer is known for her interventions and interpretations of the everyday, and her insight and sense of humour shone throughout the selection process. She lives and works in Berlin.
