Selectors for the 2000 New Contemporaries Open Call

Gavin Turk

Gavin Turk (b. 1967) is a British artist, and is considered to be one of the Young British Artists. Turk's oeuvre deals with issues of authenticity and identity, engaged with modernist and avant-garde debates surrounding the 'myth' of the artist and the 'authorship' of a work of art.

Turk studied at Chelsea School of Art from 1986 to 1989, and at the Royal College of Art from 1989 to 1991. Turk's wide ranging practice often incorporates iconic images of figures taken from popular culture and art historical sources.

Jeremy Millar

Jeremy Millar (b. 1970) is an artist and senior tutor at the Royal College of Art, London, where he teaches Critical Practice, and Critical Writing in Art and Design.

He has curated numerous exhibitions and written extensively upon contemporary art. His work in all these fields is marked by extensive research, as suggested by each particular project, and has led to an extremely diverse range of research interests, from the works of WG Sebald to gift economies in Papua New Guinea. More generally, his interests lie in contemporary criticism, contemporary art, the history of photography, film, contemporary music, visual anthropology, inter-cultural performance, museology, and the notion of ‘place’ across various disciplines.

Sarah Kent

Sarah Kent (b. 1947) is a British art critic, formerly art editor of the weekly London 'what's on' guide Time Out. She was an early supporter of the Young British Artists in general, and Tracey Emin in particular, helping her to get early exposure.

Kent studied painting at the Slade School of Art and worked as an artist until 1977. She then became Exhibitions Director at the Institute of Contemporary Arts (ICA) for two years, and also started writing for Time Out. At the ICA she staged exhibitions by Andy Warhol, Allen Jones and Christo, as well as feminist artist Alexis Hunter. Another show was of satirical art, Berlin a Critical View: Ugly Realism. Her own work changed from painting to photography, primarily of male nudes.
