New Contemporaries Studio Bursary with SPACE

We are thrilled to announce that Gal Lesham (NC 2017) is the 2023 recipient of New Contemporaries Studio Bursary with SPACE.

Receiving the studio bursary is an incredible opportunity for me right now. It will allow me the space to develop a new body of work with weeds as its protagonists. I hope to focus on printmaking with foraged materials as ink and realise a couple of book projects that have been slowly simmering. Having the space for a full year allows for this to be a seasonal and place-based endeavour, one which - for a migrant artist who’s also a mother now - is both an act of rooting down and a questioning of the notion of roots.

Gal Lesham

Gal Leshem is a London based artist and facilitator. Her work is developed through a site specific and research-based approach, often engaging with heritage sites, objects and plants embedded in myth, memory and folklore. Her work has been shown at: Christie's, Untitled Art Miami beach, Photo Paris, Huxley-Parlour Gallery (solo), San Mei Gallery, The Nunnery, Broadway Gallery, Jerusalem Film Festival, T J Boulting, APT Gallery, CCA Video Greenhouse at Fresh Paint Fair Tel Aviv. Gal completed her MA at the Slade school of Art and has a joint Hons BA in Fine Art & Art History from Goldsmiths University.

'I am so grateful for the New Contemporaries studio at SPACE. This will give me space, time and stability to be reflective and experimental in my practice, working towards longer-term goals in a sustainable way. Over the next year, I'll be using the studio to write, film, dance and make more giant sculptures that make you zoom in to issues of race and representation.'
