Our month-long Studio Bursary with Elephant Lab, London includes a free studio and materials, technical and specialist knowledge from I&D laboratory chemists and professional support from both organisations.

We are delighted to announce that Anika Roach (BNC2020) is the recipient of New Contemporaries 2021 Studio Bursary Opportunity with Elephant Lab.

Anika Roach (b. 1996) lives and works in London. Roach is a visual artist whose current practice is centred around painting. Her work seeks to broaden existing narratives around paintings of black people and investigate the social and political weight that often obscures the uniqueness of the black experience. Colour theory plays a vital part in her practice how they interact with one another. How the viewer can be affected through aesthetics, from feeling into thought. Her practice is deeply routed in excavating lesser known histories and using the charged space of the canvas to engage viewer.

Previous Recipients

Jack Sutherland (BNC19) was the second recipient of the New Contemporaries Studio Bursary with Elephant Lab.

"The post-degree world in the first year and beyond is a daunting place to find your footing in, and residency opportunities such as this are fantastic foundational platforms. What sets this apart is the materials allowance you're given; to be essentially free from the shackles of material budget restrictions".
