 selection

The 2008 exhibition will be selected by Richard Billingham, Ceal Floyer and Ken Lum.

The selection process is organised in two stages:

First stage from submissions – by end of April.

All unsuccessful applicants will be notified and submissions returned.

Second stage of selection is from the actual work. All the artists on the shortlist will be contacted and arrangements made for the collection of work. Final stage of selection – by end of May.

All works selected for the exhibition will be stored by New Contemporaries until the first venue. All works not selected for the show will be returned to the artists.

We are not able to acknowledge the receipt of applications and no correspondence will be entered into with individuals.

 submission

New Contemporaries will consider work in any medium, including painting, sculpture, installation, photography, multi-media, performance and live work, video and moving image, computer-based and websites. Selection is based on existing work only.

Proposals for new work will only be considered in the light of existing work and all details for proposed works will need to be fully developed. The artist will need to be able to fund and resource the development of any new work themselves. All work has to be able to tour.

The initial stage of selection is from the submitted material, so the quality of the documentation of work is very important. Please decide on the best format of documentation for your work.

your application

Digital images: Applicants working in 2D and 3D media should preferably supply a maximum of 10 digital images on CD-ROM as JPEGs. All images should be in RGB mode and their dimensions should not exceed 768 pixels high and 1024 pixels wide (i.e. the files should each be between 100Kb and 1Mb in size). It is essential that the JPEGs are formatted so that they can be viewed on a Mac. Any other digital formats will not be accepted (no powerpoint presentations, TIFFs, PSDs, I-Photo etc.) Clearly label both the CD-ROM and its case with your name. Please check that you have burned the images onto the CD before sending them in, by reinserting your disc into your computer and opening up the files. This and other simple mistakes can then be avoided. Do use Fuji Film/Photo CDR (with black underside).

Slides: 35mm slides will be accepted if digital images cannot be made. A maximum of 10 slides in glassless slide mounts are required. Each should be clearly labelled with the applicant's name and the slide number marked on the front bottom left hand corner of the slide mount. Slides must be sent in an A4 plastic sleeve with ring-binder holes to the left. Slides should not be sent in a slide box. On no account should both 35mm slides and CD-ROM be sent (please choose one format ONLY).

Video: Applicants working in time-based media should provide a video DVD only. We are unable to view videos in other formats (no VHS tapes or Quicktime or AVI files etc on CD-ROM). Applicants may submit a maximum of 3 works. If each work is longer than 7 minutes recommended that shorter "show-reel" extracts should be sent. Please specify how you intend to present the work for exhibition: single monitor, video projection, installation formats. The applicant's name should be clearly labelled on both the DVD and its case.

Do not send video documentation of work in other media such as painting or sculpture. Do not send stills from a video as well as the video itself.

Audio: Please supply sound works in MP3 or AIF/WAV format on CD-ROM only. Submit short extracts where applicable.

Proposals: Please supply as hardcopy on one A4 sheet.

Websites, online projects: We are unable to access online works. Please supply either a copy on CD-ROM, or supply adequate documentation.

Application forms include an Image List that requires the title, medium, size and date of each work. Please ensure that the list corresponds the numerical order on the JPEGs, slides or DVDs.

All disks need to be clearly labelled with the title of work, your name the duration of work. If you supply digital files, make sure we can view the work on a Mac 'out of the box' with no specific software on it.

Please note that New Contemporaries (1988) Ltd cannot be held responsible for lost or damaged slides/submissions. Please submit duplicate rather than original slides/videos and make sure that all documentation is clearly labelled and securely packaged. It is not possible to return any of the submitted material until after completion of the selection process. Please ensure adequate postage and wrapping for the weight and size of the application to ensure the safe return of material.
